I'm teaching about the Vietnam War right now...what do you remember about it if you were alive then? I need some first-hand accounts. Tell me about the draft and how it worked. Tell me what people were thinking.
Five presidencies...15 years...a draft...Guerilla Warfare...secrets...secret wars...more bombs dropped than in WWI and WW2 combined (in Laos especially)...millions dead...and for what? Many say this is the war the U.S. lost...would it have been best for us to stay in our own country vs. going to help...many say the United States' intention was to spread imperialism and push democracy in yet another area of the world...do you agree w/ that?

Hi Sarah,
You can check out our blog from our time in Vietnam (March 2010). We did many touristy things while there, trying to learn about the "War with America" as they call it there. We also read a couple of books that were about the warfare- One about the Cu Chi Tunnels ( http://www.amazon.com/Tunnels-Cu-Chi-Tom-Mangold/dp/0425089517 ) and one a memoir by a female doctor helping out in the trenches (Last Night I Dreamed of Peace by Dang Thuy Tram). This year is the 20th Anniversary of Asa's dad's death. He died from Sinus Cancer from the Agent Orange used in Vietnam. I imagine this will be a topic the students are all very interested in...so many of them have family ties to Vietnam...I wonder if their families might be able to offer some insight as well. I know that 2 of my former students had fathers that fought in the war.
My dad has some very interesting viewpoints on this, as he served there. It shaped who he was at 18 years old. Let me know if you want his contact info.
